The reserve was declared to protect the elephants and their habitat after significant losses during the Civil War as a result of poaching.

In the mid-1970s, big numbers of elephant were moved into the reserve from South Africa's Umfolozi Reserve, but only about 200 survived (and not a single rhino survided).
The number of elephants in the reserve today is between 200 and 300 but they are notoriously skittish.

Look out instead for hippos, zebras, kudu, duikers and baboons.

Ponta Milibangalala is about 35 km from the main gate along the coast.

There is camping here but you have to be self-sufficient to the point of taking your own fresh water, so be prepared and don't just go trotting off blithely in a sarong.

The best camping is along the beach.
There are also community-run spots around here with basic accomodation.
