Under Portuguese colonialism, the city was known as LM - Lourenço Marques - after a Portuguese navigator who anchored here in the 15th century.

The city grew rapidly in the last part of the 19th century on the back of the railway line being built into the interior following the dicovery of gold and diamonds in South Africa.

Maputo was a stepping stone to the reef, gateway for assorted adventurers, wayfarers, traders and dealers.
Lourenço Marques became officially Portuguese in 1873 after a dispute that year between Portugal and Britain, which was resolved in Portugal's favour.

During the first decade of the 19th century, most hotels were in the baixa, or downtown, with the exception of Hotel Cardoso which was uptown in the former residence of the navy commander of the same name.

The famous Hotel Real was built in 1887.

The Polana Hotel was officially opened in 1922.
