Under the Portuguese, Xai-Xai was known as Joao Belo after the Portuguese minister of colonies in the mid-1920s.
While there are parts of Mozambique known for their role in the slave trade, Xai-Xai's winds sing the sad whisper of a different, more moderne kind of slavery.

From the mid-1900s Xai-Xai was the main recruitment centre for the Witwatersrand Native Labour Organisation.
Hundreds of thousands of Mozambicans left this area to become migrant labours in Egoli.
Their plight is immortalised in Hugh Masekela's song, "Stimela", which tells of the train that takes men from Mozambique to the sweaty, hot, slave pits in the gold mines.
